Most 12V car batteries last 3–5 years in moderate climates — closer to 3 in Phoenix summers and 5 in cooler coastal areas. Slow cranking on cold mornings is a symptom, not a diagnosis; corrosion on the + post can drop voltage enough to mimic a dead cell.
Safety first
Eye protection and gloves. No sparks near the battery — remove the − cable first when disconnecting, − last when reconnecting. If the case is swollen or cracked, stop and replace — do not clean terminals on a failing case.
Terminal cleaning steps
- Note radio codes if your manual requires them after disconnect.
- Loosen − clamp, wiggle off. Tuck it where it cannot touch the post.
- Loosen + clamp, remove.
- Mix baking soda and water; scrub posts and clamps with a terminal brush until bright lead/tin color.
- Rinse with a damp cloth; dry thoroughly.
- Reconnect + first, then −. Snug clamps — they should not twist the post.
- Thin coat of dielectric grease on terminals (not inside the clamp gap).
Torque spec on many clamp nuts is hand-tight plus a quarter turn — overtightening cracks soft lead posts.
Hold-down and tray
Battery should not slide more than 1/4 inch. A loose battery fractures internal plates on bumps. Clean the tray; rust-through trays leak acid onto frame metal — worth fixing before a new battery sits there.
Testing without fancy tools
- Resting voltage (engine off 6+ hours): 12.4–12.7V on a multimeter at the posts is typical for a charged battery. Below 12.2V often means discharged or weak.
- After jump or drive: if voltage does not hold above 13.5V at idle with loads off, the charging system may not be keeping up — shop test, not repeated jumps.
Parts stores offer free load tests — take the battery in or ask them to test in the car if cables reach.
Replacement sizing
Match group size (H6, 35, 24F, etc.), CCA rating equal or higher than spec, and AGM if the car came with AGM (start-stop systems often require it). Swap one for one on the same CCA unless the manual allows upgrade.
Dispose of old batteries at the retailer — core charge applies.
Pair with related checks
Weak batteries stress starters. After replacement, verify tire pressure if TPMS was blinking from low system voltage during cranking.
