Driveway maintenance saves money on oil checks, tire pressure, wiper swaps, and terminal cleaning. It stops being savings when the job needs a lift, a scan tool, or touches a system that can hurt you if it fails at 70 mph.

- The job requires a one-time scan tool re-learn you cannot rent locally.
Buying a used car? A pre-purchase inspection is shop work worth paying for before you own the problem.
What stays in the driveway
- Cold tire PSI and tread checks with a gauge.
- Battery terminal cleaning and safe jump-start procedure.
- Wiper blade replacement when arms and glass are sound.
- Visual fluid checks and scheduling oil changes per the manual.
- Seasonal walkarounds from the spring checklist.
How to pick a shop
- Ask for a written estimate before authorization.
- Independent shops with ASE-certified techs are fine for most maintenance; dealer for warranty recalls and some scan-tool re-learns.
- Get a second quote on any repair over $500 if the first explanation is vague.
Good mechanics respect owners who already checked tires and oil — bring your notes, not a self-diagnosis from a forum.
